Sun Bears, are the world’s smallest bear species, also known as “the dog bear” because of their close family ties to man’s best friend. If you put a Sun Bear and a big black dog in the same room, it would be hard to tell them apart. They are similar in size, looks, and they even bark the same!
FUN FACT: In 2013, a Chinese bloke was planting some Banana Trees when someone strolled on over to him and offered him two puppies. He bought these gorgeous little puppers and groomed them every day, taking very good care of them. He loved them dearly, but when they hit the 40kg mark about two years later, he thought something might be up. When he saw a leaflet in the mail that had a list of endangered species on it, he recognised his puppers right away as the Sun Bear! He notified authorities, and the bears are now in the Yunnan Wild Animal Rescue Centre in China. Wooo, a happy ending.
What isn’t so happy is the illegal pet trade of Sun Bears, the paw trade, and the bear bile trade. The Sun Bear population is said to have declined by 30% in the last 30 years. Sun Bears are an endangered species and they need your help. There are multiple organisations that you can donate to that are helping the Sun Bears. Alternatively, you could buy a tube of our Aussie made Sun Bear Sunscreen. We donate a massive 80% of our profits to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, where the ever passionate Dr Wong works so hard to rescue and release these little guys.
